The Windows Disk Defragmenter is a computer program that comes with Microsoft Windows. The purpose of the program is to increase access speed by rearranging files sorted on the hard disk to occupy contiguous storage locations. This process and technique is known as defragmenting. It is designed to ultimately optimize the time it takes to read and write files to and from the disk by minimizing head travel time and maximizing the transfer rate. Within Windows XP, the disk defragmenter is also used as a way to improve system startup times.

Starting at Windows 9x, the disk defragmentation tool was made available. Before that a third party had released a disk defragmenter for use with Windows 9x. A useful add on that has been made available in Windows Vista is that you can opt to run the disk defragmenter at certain repeated times. This way, you don't have to worry about remembering to run the disk defragmenter. You can simply set the times that you want it to run. In Windows Vista, you can also select which volumes are to be defragmented along with a simpler user interface.
